Kennel cough can usually work itself out, kind of like a mild cold with humans, but since I have a three month old puppy, I took him to the vet for some antibiotics. Usually they prescribe some antibiotics to fight the bacteria, and some anti-inflammatory for the inflammation on your dogs throat from all the coughing.. It usually takes about a month for kennel cough to fully run its course.

Kennel cough is usually worse at night. If your dog sleeps in the room with you, try turning off the air conditioner and opening the windows. The humidity and semi-warm air from outside will loosen the mucous in his/her throat and help it clear out. This also helped with my dog.

Be careful with kennel cough, if it worsens, it can morph into pneumonia, and that can be deadly!

I would reccommend taking your dog to the vet for a checkup. Its better to be safe than sorry!

Don’t worry too much, kennel cough is treatable with antibiotics. Your boy will be ok in a few days.

And yes, kennel cough runs rampant in dog parks, and dogs are very susceptible even if they have been vaccinated.

Even if they are vaccinated, Kennel Cough is like the flu virus; there are multiple strains and the vaccine only protects against some of them. Continuous wet sounding coughs and sneezes is one way to tell if our dog has this virus, but another way to tell is if you rub their throats. If they cough as you’re doing this, it is a sign that they may have Kennel Cough. It is airborne and extremely contagious to other dogs, but rarely, if ever, fatal. It will eventually clear up on its own, but the vet can prescribe medication that will clear it up faster.
