hacking cough which sometimes produces thick or light mucus. sometimes a runny nose. the cough sounds like a seal barking or a child with the croup. 1tsp of dimetapp cough medicine at bedtime will make your dog more comfortable. offer plenty of fresh water and don’t be surprised if he doesn’t eat a lot. if the cough isn’t getting better after 2 days with the cough med., call your vet. If you have other dogs, try to keep them seperated as kennel cough is contagious. ***the dimetapp is recommended by vets for dogs with kennel cough for those reading this that are against giving people medicine to animals.***just a note also…if your dog has allergies or a stuffy nose/sneezing, you can give him 1 tsp of benadryl every 4-6 hours. also vet approved. good luck.
yes, that sounds like kennel cough alright. usually lasts a few weeks. You can either go to the vet for anti-biotics or a home remedy is benylin cough mixture which a friend in the US advised. It is wise to keep your dog away from others too until it has gone as it is infectious. My dog that I adopted from a rescue centre had it bad. I went for the vet option this time. Hope it gets better soon.
A dry, hacking cough is the most common sign. Dogs with this disease will often have coughing spells followed by hanging their head over and making a gagging or retching sound from their throat. In fact, many clients suspect that the dog has something lodged in their throat when it turns out to be Canine Cough. Sometimes the coughing can lead to nausea. Fever, malaise, and loss of appetite are uncommon symptoms with Canine Cough but are sometimes seen.
Call your vet because the call is FREE.
Kennel cough is a highly contagious upper respiratory infection that often affects animals that are kept in a confined space such as boarding kennels, dog shows or veterinary hospitals.
Symptoms include a persistent dry hacking cough or bouts of deep harsh coughing often followed by gagging, which may produce a foamy mucus.
