Dog Vaccinations 2 – Lifestyle Vaccines – Flu and Kennel Cough

I got my 10-wk old puppy from the local shelter this past Sat. She’d already had her 1st set of vaccines & yesterday I took her to the vet for her 2nd set. While there they found she has a Respiratory infection (Kennel Cough), Giardia (protozoan that causes diarrhea), Sarcoptic Mange (a parasite), and a Staph infection. She was very good at the vet…didn’t bark or cry & stood still for the doctor. When we got home that evening with her, we gave the 1st medication for the Giardia & waited until this morning to start her other meds. WELL. My normally sweet, obedient, quiet puppy turned into a MONSTER. Was "playing" VERY rough, biting me & wouldn’t stop, hiding under the bed to chew up the box spring, going after electrical cords, running nonstop. Usually goes to bed @ 9 but was up until 12 & kept us up the entire night, barking/whining/clawing at her cage. What happened? Will she settle down again? The vet even said, "she’s either a good dog or she’s sick." Now what??!
Just to note, she was very playful before – she just listened when we told her no if she got a bit rough.
Does our vet showing us how to do the "alpha roll" and us using that on our pup have anything to do with her behavior??

He had been vaccinated DA2PPC and neutered. They lied and said he was healthy. He was on a round of Albon when I got him, but she said it was something they gave to all the dogs just to be safe. I just believed her. He still has diarrhea. He has kennel cough and is taking amoxicillian. He has gained two pounds but you can still feel his ribs and backbone. Plus he made my dog sick who is now coughing and will now have to take amoxicillian. I will never get another dog from a shelter no matter how sorry I feel for it. Will this ever end? This 0 dog has ended up costing another 0 plus put my dog at risk. I would have been better off buying a healthy dog from a local breeder.

I disputed my credit card fee for this. I will not pay for it. How disgusting are shelters? This was at a pet store when they bring the shelter dogs in to adopt. Never again. This poor dog should have been put out of his misery before they ever started giving him vaccines and operations.
I didn’t take the dog back because I knew they would have killed it. It is disgusting that they allow sick dogs to go out and infect other dogs in the public though. The poor dog should have been destroyed if he was so ill not poked, prodded, neutered and put in a cage to suffer. He is gaining weight though which is good. But I never would have even considered getting him if I knew it would make my dog sick.

Is this vet expensive?

I took my dog to a new vet, and the charge for DA2PPC (distemper?), kennel cough and lyme Vaccines and a quick general checkup was
8. (That includes .50 in medical waste disposal charges for the shots!)
Thanks!
Oops, Single Worker was right! (You are sharp!) We did get a heartworm+ test. So that is off…

Thanks everybody!

Puppy viral infection possibly Kennel Cough?

I woke up this morning to my 13 week old Australian Bulldog puppy Bear with this hacking cough. I have taken him to the vet and he said it was a viral infection and although he has had 2 of his vaccines it could possibly be Kennel Cough (recent outbreak in our area). As it is very mild (just sleepy, coughing sporadically – after/during play, he still loves food) he said he didn’t want to give him antibiotics (as to not lower immune system) unless it gets worse. He specifically refered to increase in frequency/severity of cough, loss of appetite and temperature. He gave me some cough medicine for relief in case it gets worse. I was just wanting to know of any ones experiences relating this and what to keep an eye out for and any natural remedies to boost immune system and overall health. Thank you heaps, please be nice as I am just a worried mummy.
Thankyou for all your help 🙂

anti-vaccine crowd, what say you?

Long detailed Q, so apologies in advance.

So I’ve been trying to limit the chemicals, infectious agents, diseases, pesticides, toxins and whatnot my dogs ingest by being more selective about which vaccinations, flea/tick/heartworm meds I give them, not just haphazardly but following guidelines published by actual vets (albeit vets with a more homeopathic than mainstream philosophy). I’ve read several sources and adopted what seems to make sense and is corroborated.

Before my recent move, my 1.5 yr old dogs never circulated with ‘stranger’ dogs. They had their neighborhood friends, were never kennelled, never went to dog parks.

As such, we skipped the Bordatella vaccine.

Now that we’ve moved, our situation is different and we need (and want) to occassionally send our dogs to doggy day-care. The daycare we chose did not require Bordatella vaccinations.

Care to guess what happened next? Ruh Roh! our dogs promptly caught kennel cough and the house became a honky-tonk of honky dogs!

Now I know that kennel cough is nothing serious usually. Still, it leaves me with a decision to make.

Also – I’ve moved to NH, where according to our new vet – they do see a significant # of lyme disease cases, and of course lyme is bad news.

I’ve read the anti-Bordatella and anti-Lyme vaccination arguments …. but as of now I have changed my mind and I intend to give in and shoot my dogs up with both vaccines.

Anybody have a good argument against … or for? Something better than just the basic spiel?

We have 3 dogs and a 6 month pup. I just adopted a 9 week old pup last week and she has kennel cough. All our dogs vaccines are up to date but they never had that shot. We never go anywhere because we have them. Pup just has little gag, so I took her to vet . He put her on Cephalexin 250mg a day. If I get my dogs shots for that tomorrow will it help?

He had his bortella vaccine and still came home coughing, exactly why my MIL said not to ever put our dog in a kennel, but since I was told I was such a horrible pet owner to leave the dog alone for a weekend (with someone checking him 2 times a day) I did what was advised and put him in the kennel.
So the kennel says the vaccine only protects against certain strains not all (NOW they say that)!
So do I need to take the dog now to a vet or b/c it is a virus does it pass on it’s own in time like a common cold virus?
TJ can you read? Yes he has his bordatella vaccine every year as well as is completely up to date on all his vaccines, as well the kennel did have me bring his vet records proving he had all his vaccines and told me they require this of all the pets they board and furthermore told me not to worry about kennel cough since the vaccine would protect him. We in the 5 years of owning him have never once been behind in his vaccines but have avoided all kennels b/c MIL told us about kennel cough. We just moved out of state not even a month ago, we have had not yet met anyone in the area and knew nobody here yet to take the dog, but a coworker of my husband’s was willing to come walk and check on him 2 times a day, the rest of day he’d be at work. We were concerned about kennel cough and the fact that he hates other dogs but the kennel assured us that as long as we paid the extra /day fee he would not ever be around any of the other dogs, they put him a room off the side of the office.
Only after he came home and was coughing and I called them did they tell me how the vaccine does not protect from all strqains, had I known this I’d have never boarded him. Anyway he is coughing much less today than he had been Monday and Tuesday and since we need to find a new vet here in Cali anyway I will take him, but I wanted to know if it was like a child with a cold, is there even anything they can do, I do not want him pumped up with antibiotics (like the doctors did for years with kids) when it is viral and not bacterial just to make some vet richer and help pay for his sports car.
Last time I asked while still waiting for my husband to call me back from work to tell me if he had found anyone willing to check in on him or not, AND I had just been told my BIL DIED AT THE AGE OF 34 in a CAR ACCIDENT!!!!!!IAnd I was suddenly making all te arrangements to travel with 2 kids and I am 8 1/2 months pregnant!
You people are totally ignorant!
This dog is treated very well, he gets an all organic diet, he is groomed every month, he is walked every 3 hours and is pampered. When we leave him even to go the grocery store he gets mad and pees on the rug, (same rug at least), he does not get scolded or anything b/c his trainer (who we did have to let go b/c he cost 0 an hour) told us dachsunds all do this out of anger at thier owners for leaving them. When the weather is mild enough we always take him. Every vacation he goes with, we pay extra for crappy rooms just to have him with us at the hotel, so please stoo being so mean!
And my husband says no way to a strange person being in our home, so a pet sitter we are not friends with is out, there most likely will not be a next time as we managed to go 5 years never experiencing this, but his vaccine papers from the vet said his bortella vaccine was good for one year, not one month, and he should not have needed it again until February 2011 according to his records, so this is first I heard of this and will be calling our old vet in Oregon to ask about it as this is where he recieved it, and the kennel also told me it was good for a year as well when we were discussing the vaccine and my kennel cough concerns.
When I went to the store, she checked my vet records and saw he had already had his bortatella vaccine at the vets and said I did not need the spray at all, I had no idea this vaccine was even for kennel cough we just get what the doctor says to get each time. So we never did use the spray, but he has not been coughing now since this morning seems very happy, he is eating and drinking fine, so I think he will be OK. We need to find a new vet here anyway so I made an appointment for next week, the lady had no prior openings and said it was not anythng to be concerned about since he was coughing less today and had no other signs of sickness. She said just to call back if he would get worse again. I figured it was kind of like a doggy cold.

i have a 7 month old chihuahua/dachshund, and i took her took get a professional bath and spa at a pro grooming place and then i took her outside for a walk and it was really windy i held her and didn’t let her walk though and she had a jacket on. and she has had all of her vaccines will she catch a cold or a kennel cough?

What is the most affordable vet in Lubbock,TX?

I just moved to the area and just need to get in to get my dog the kennel cough vaccine so she can go to day care. She is up to date on all other vaccines. Normally id go to petco clinics but theyre arent any around here. Maybe even a low-cost vaccination clinic.

She’s a Bichon and a few times a day she’ll cough like she’s trying to get up a hairball. Nothing ever comes up and she hasn’t been exposed to other dogs (for say, kennel cough) and she’s up to date on her vaccines. Do puppies normally do that? Can they get hairballs like a cat?

Why is my dog making a weird noise?

It sounds like part sneeze part hacking cough. Could it be kennel cough?

He’s up to date on all his vaccines. I boarded him overnight maybe 5 months ago.
hmm, mya is a ray of sunshine isnt she?
Thank you pilot. I was thinking it could be allergies too.

I am currently in the Army Reserves and have battle assembly once a month. I’ve also just recently moved to a new state and I don’t know anyone yet that can watch my dogs. So after doing thorough research on boarding facilities I found one I thought that was good but I turned out being disappointed. Before boarding my dogs I had their vaccinations renewed, which included the Bordetella vaccine. These vaccines were given 10 days prior to me taking them to the boarding facility. They only stayed there for 2 nights, and 2 1/2 days and still got Kennel Cough. I am upset with the facility but I’m wondering do I have the right to be? I never have boarded my dogs before so I’m not sure if Kennel Cough is something dogs always get after boarding or if this facility is to blame? Are there other things I can do to prevent kennel cough with my dogs in the future besides all the new vaccines they were just given?

Where are bordatella shots usually injected in dogs?

Our dog just had his bordatella (kennel cough) shot, and now he has a small bump on his left rear leg. Is this usually where veterinarians inject vaccines?

Can babies catch whooping cough from dogs?

I read online that Kennel cough is a related strain of virus to that of Whooping Cough. I’m concerned cause I have a dog and a 15 month old at home, Dog has Whooping cough and Baby is always near the dog.

My baby has had 3 vaccines for the Whooping cough, 2 months, 4 months and 6 months, and will be going again for her 4th shot in 2 weeks.

I read that people who are exposed to Whooping Cough if they take anti-biotics can prevent getting the infection, but I don’t want to give my daughter antibiotics if I don’t have to, but I also don’t want to ignore it and have her get it.

My husband said first of all it’s a dog, not a human (although web sites say it can be transmitted from Dogs to Kids), plus she’s had 3 vaccines against it.

Anyone think I should get the antibiotics or am I just being over paranoid?

Okay Our Sasha hasn’t had the vaccine ever so she is definately getting it. Zack our poodle had it last december, should he go ahead and have it again. They are going to be boarded 10 days and I don’t want them getting kennel cough if it can be prevented. (my grandfathers poodle died of kennel cough, it was that year when it was a mutilated strain and the vaccines didn’t fight it)

So should he get it again
They are being boarded at the vets…they said she needed it but they weren’t sure about him (we know she needs it) I told them he had it when he was boarded in december…but that was the receptionist that told me that…I’m going to ask when we go in (they will be boarded next thursday if they both need it) I don’t want them to get sick
Cindy you obviously didn’t read the whole question because I stated i knew it was the vaccine against kennel cough and one dog had the vaccine back in december
