My dog been doing this for 1 year since Summer… Visit the vet 4 times, they all say it is allergy. Tried different allergy medicine but didn’t work. My dog eats well, plays well, behaves the same except this coughing/sneezing sign. Can someone tell me what is this?? Someone told me it could be heart worm which I dont think so…

Jonah’s Kennel Cough

I know this is a horrible video. Just wanted to upload to show how Jonah has been coughing. The camera is too far to hear his coughs. Plus there wasn’t enough light to get a good look at him. Jonah has been coughing and gagging. We believe it’s kennel cough. We gave him some honey to soothe his throat and later on he’s going to get to go into a “sauna” to help his throat.

Chowmein’s CHF Cough

No, it’s not always kennel cough…This is a classic “CHF” cough. She used to look at me helplessly, as if she didn’t understand what was happening to her. I kept Chowmein and Wonton in the Green Playroom by themselves, so they could have companionship, but have a commotion-free area to rest in. Her brother looked visibly concerned when she’d start coughing, but stayed right with her. At first the Furosemide helped, but ultimately it couldn’t keep the fluid away. On her last night, he crawled into her bed beside her, leaving his own empty. After she died, he “reserved” a space in the bed for her, not permitting anyone else to sleep there. The first night, he tried howling to locate her, and was dismayed when she didn’t respond…It was heart-breaking. They shared a very close bond. Please remember to provide proper dental care for your dogs….regular brushing, and cleanings at the vets, is imperative for small dogs especially. Chowmein’s heart disease and overall condition was worsened by the condition that her previous owner allowed her teeth to be in, and led to her life being shorter than it had to be.

Dog water bowl filtration system

This system is designed to clean dog water in between sips (and slurps). In a kennel environment, dogs come and go all the time, making a wonderful breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. Just like children in school, dogs often come home from kennel with an upset stomach or a sore throat. Kennel cough is very common in kennels and dog parks, and although it’s primarily spread by coughing a secondary vector is drinking water. I see it as my job as a dog kennel owner to minimize risk of disease however possible, so in the past few months I’ve implemented a few simple solutions. The first is this water cleaning system. The system is made up of a few parts: 1) A pump. In this case, I used a Hydor Seltz L20. This pump has a flowrate of 700 liters (185 gallons) per hour. 2) Piping. You can get this at any hardware or pet store. 3) A filter (or actually, a sterilizer). I use a Laguna Powerclear PT-520 filter, which rather than absorbing sediment, simply kills viruses and bacteria using ultraviolet (UV) light. I used a UV filter rather than a carbon (absorbing) filter for reasons explained in the video. For this system to work reliably, you also need an automatic filling system (otherwise the pump will burn out when the bowl empties). For this, I used the following: 1) A toilet float (also called a ballcock) to automatically shut off water when the bowl is full. 2) Piping, specifically made for attaching to toilet cisterns. 3) Some wood to build a frame around the bowl to

Kennel Cough – Bordetella Vaccination

Kennel cough” is an infectious bronchitis characterized by a harsh, hacking cough which most people describe as sounding like “something stuck in my dog’s throat.” It is analogous to a chest cold for humans and is only a serious condition in special circumstances; in general, it resolves on its own. A dog with Kennel Cough generally feels active and maintains a normal appetite despite frequent fits of coughing. There is usually no fever or listlessness, just lots of coughing. The Bordetella vaccine is administered to dogs to prevent kennel cough and is recommended if your dog will be socializing with other dogs. Kennel cough will rarely lead to death, but the vaccine can prevent breakouts of the infection, and it can lessen the worry of owners. The vaccination is given two ways, and it’s usually grouped with other vaccinations and given in multiple doses over time to gradually build up your dog’s immunity. There is a fringe group of people who claim that the vaccine is overused and actually quite harmful to dogs.
