Kennel Cough question!?
we live in a rural area with 25 acres. i was looking online and it said that the dog is usually infected 1-2 weeks prior to symptoms, like if they were with a lot of dogs or were the virus was relevant. 1-2 weeks ago she was chasing cows for about an hour and wasn’t coughing. other than that she hasnt seen any dogs except our other healthy ones. now yesterday we were on a walk and she started to chase a deer and she came back coughing and gagging. we though she was just out of breathe until this morning she was still gagging and coughing harshly. could this be a respritory infection or just something that will pass. she coughed all night it made me cry, should i call the vet? or is it a false alarm? help please?

Hi,
Aside from the hacking cough, your dog will appear generally healthy, with a good appetite. There’s a slight chance that a more severe, life-threatening case of kennel cough can develop, so pay close attention to your dog as he fights off the infection. If you notice symptoms such as a watery nasal discharge, sluggishness, loss of appetite, and fever, it’s time to see your vet. Here’s more info:

We can’t diagnose your dog here, you need to see or talk to a vet.
you should call the vet. a cough can indicate alot of things. it could be kennel cough, it could be an upper resperatory infection, it could be early stages of pneumonia , some worms can cause coughing. it could be ALOT of things. and some serious that cant be treated with over the counter meds.
you know a dog has kennel cough when it starts coughing when its excited. so start calling your dogs name and try and get it all crazy. if she coughs that means shes got it. its nothing to worry about though. its basically a cold for dogs. but it can turn into something severe. so take it to the vet, theyll give it some meds and she’ll be alll better.
When a dog gets a cough, its self-perpetuating. That means it’s only going to get worse until correctly treated. Your dog needs the vet to diagnose and treat her cough because some of the reasons can be quite serious.
Seems to me that ‘coughing all night’ and gagging would necessitate a call to the vet. But, that’s just me. . .
Recently, my dog was at a boarding kennel and she came back with all the symptoms your dog had. Yes, when we took her to the vet, he said it was kennel cough. But only your vet can really decide what disease your dog has.
Hope I helped!
