Kennel cough is not life threatening for healthy, adult dogs; however, puppies need treatment and they need it as soon as you notice the symptoms. In puppies it can be very serious, even developing into pneumonia. Adults can fight it off, puppies need antibiotics and if your puppy’s showing symptoms, there’s not way on this earth I’d wait until next week to take her to the vet.
And no, there’s nothing you can do at home for a puppy.
You don’t mention whether your puppy is actually showing signs of kennel cough or not but here goes:
It can be life threatening however in most cases it is easily treatable with antibiotics. It generally isn’t life threatening until it has progressed into the more severe bronchopneumonia.
If she is sneezing/coughing/runny nose get her to the vet sooner than next week since if they DO get sick puppies can sometimes get worse quickly- but if she is doing okay in the meantime just keep it in mind.
I work in an animal hospital that treats puppies routinely with parvo/distemper/kennel cough and bronchopneumonia- generally at worst they are admitted and go home a few days later. Worst case scenario they do sometimes die but it is unusual in that case and if it were that bad more than likely you would have been on your way to the vet by now instead of being on the internet looking for advice!
Good for you for adopting anyway! The infection, even if she does get it, is treatable (usually with something like chloramphenicol or doxycycline) and you will have saved a life. ^_^
Kennel cough is like a bad cold in people. The same prescription applies – rest, fluids and wait for it to pass. You can use a small amount of children’s cough syrup, but FIRST CHECK THE CORRECT DOSE WITH YOUR VET. Normall it’s just a nasty cough, but keep an eye out for other symptoms as KC can sometimes lead to bronchitis or pneumonia. When in doubt, ask the vet.
i had two puppies with kennel cough from shelters.
you need to treat it NOW. If the vet does not have an
earlier appointment, find another vet.
It needs to be treated with antibiotics or it gets worse and
develops into pneumonia. and that is life threatening.
you want to give them bordetella. its a vaccine that prevents kennel cough. you can either get the injectable kind or the nasal kind which goes in their nose and you can buy it online from http://www.drsfostersmith.com and the single ones are like 3 bucks on their and you give it to your animal yourself its pretty simple
