Kennel cough…How long and how contagious?

I have a 3 year old rat terrier. He is healthy and about 12 pounds. I am dogsitting for a 3 month old chihuaha that the vet said had kennel cough. He was given antibiotics and has not been coughing since he was given the meds. How long will he be contagious for? I don’t want to get our dog sick. I was told that it is something that only puppies get because their immune system is not built up enough. What should I do?

Kennel cough can be bacterial or viral and is extremely contagious. Bring your dog to the vet and get a Bordetella vaccine. Even if he has contracted it the vaccine will lessen the severity of some strains. With the injection, if your dog has already contracted Kennel Cough it shouldn’t go into pneumonia, which it can sometimes do.
This vaccine is not usually administered to dogs that aren’t kenneled or not around a group of dogs such as on the show circuit. Had your dog not been exposed then I would not recommend giving it.
Any secretary at a vets office can offer you some good info for free but if it hasnt been coughing for more than a few days it should be fine.
if your dog has been immunised he may still get it but not to the same extent as an un immunised dog. its best to keep them seperate. I think they are only contagious when they are coughing
Kennel cough is very contagious. If there is no coughing, you’re ok, but I would separate them while you’re away from the house (just in case there’s coughing while you’re gone). Adult dogs can get kennel cough, and they can get it more than once. Kennel cough is alot like the flu -> there is more than one virus, and the vaccine only covers the dog for the most virulent strains. Even vaccinated dogs can get kennel cough (although this is NOT reason to not give the vaccine to animals that have the opportunity to become exposed). Kennel cough itself is self limiting (it will go away on it’s own), but antibiotics keep it from escalating to something worse (like pneumonia). Use great caution!!
my puppy’s had that too i went to the vet and they gave me some pills the effects should wear off in a month or so keep them separated (one in garage other in backyard)or one in house and the other outside and it is very contagious but idk if an adult dog can get it my puppy’s did get it though but they’re fine now hope this helps
that, you need to take your dog to the vet—-right now
