This dog we are watching has kennel cough and the owner is not around. We really can’t afford more bills by taking the dog to the vet. Is there any good home treatments for this? Thanks

Kennel cough will often run its course on its own like a cold or flu in humans, but there are no at home treatments that will help with the symptoms that I am aware of. If it is severe, the dog does need to see a vet for treatment to prevent it from developing pneumonia.
Kennel cough passes like the common cold, but you have to be sure it’s kennel cough (or tracheal bronchitis). A lot of vet’s say "we treat the owners, not the dog" because giving the dog antibiotics helps, but the cough clears on it’s own in time. It is really important that you don’t let the dog with kennel cough near any other dogs, because it is highly contagious through contact and air. Kennel cough spreads like wild fire. As far as home treatments, theres not too much you can do. Monitor the cough, and make sure the dog is still eating and drinking. As long as he is eating and drinking, he is okay. If the cough gets much worse, you will want to consider going to the vet. Keep a close eye on it
If it’s not your dog, inform the owner and ask for instructions what to do.
KC lasts for several weeks and can become a full blown pneumonia in certain cases.
Are you sure its kennel cough? I thought my dog had it until we took her to the vets and it was a terrible case of pneumonia and she had to be on antibiotics for 14 days. I would get in contact with the owners immediately and see what they want you to do.
When I get a cough, I drink warm tea with honey. Be sure to tell him to cover his mouth when he coughs. Germs fly!
Good luck.
My Vet recommends Benilyn Paediatric cough syrup, 1 teaspoonful every 4 hours while the symptoms persist.
Kennel Cough usually lasts for three weeks. The cough syrup helps to soothe the throat and it does make the dog more comfortable.
If you are unable to get Benilyn where you are I am sure your Pharmacist will be able to recommend a similar Children’s cough medicine.
Just make sure your dog doesn’t come into contact with any other dogs as KC is very contagious. Keep him warm and allow him access to plenty of water.
Aside from Kennel Cough remedies posted here, do try to make sure the collar isnt too heavy or tight. I personally prefer to use body harness because it doesnt "strangle" the dog. I noticed my dog tended to cough when we used a collar, so i changed it.
A normal case of kennel cough will resolve on it’s own within 2 weeks. Antibiotics are only given if it progresses to pneumonia. The dog’s own immune system must overcome the kennel cough virus.
Vitamin C can be given to boost the immune system – 250 mg for small dogs and 500 mg. for large dogs.
Also give a teaspoon of honey three times a day. You can give it on bread or just let the dog lick it off a spoon. This will help soothe an irritated throat and help with the cough. Try to avoid cough suppressants unless the cough is so constant the dog is unable to rest.
Remove collar so it will not antagonize the cough. Feed soft foods in case the throat is sore.
Use a vaporizer in the room with the dog or run your shower on hot and let the dog steam in there for 20 minutes, three times a day. This will help loosen the phlegm and make the cough more productive.
