You can give them HALF the dose of Pediatric Robitussin Cough and Cold or Cough every four to six hours for the coughing. But that isn’t a treatment, only a way to make your dog more comfortable.
Kennel cough can be a tricky thing. Sometimes the dog can be fine and the virus will run it’s course with no serious complications and then other times you can get a dog that become very sick with the secondary infections already mentioned and need to be rushed to the vet or they’ll die.
Really, I would take them to the vet, or at least the worst one and work out a payment plan. Most vets allow them.
Good luck.
Not to be rude. But you shouldn’t have a dog if you can’t afford it.Now you have two sick dogs. Now what?
Ask for a payment plan at the vet.
First of all if you can’t afford a vat you can’t afford a pet. Try going to your local vet and see what the actual price is. I’m sure if you love your pet you can make it happen.
Try to find a low cost clinic … It is really important that you take them to see a vet because kennel cough can cause symptoms of lethargy, fever, inappetence, pneumonia, and in very severe cases, even death. If you take them to a vet before it gets worse then they will give you an antibiotic which will help them get better! good luck to your dogs!
I would contact the local humane association. If you can’t afford vet care, the humane association would be happy to help. It is much better to contact them yourself than to have an unrelated person call on you for abuse. The humane association may check up on your animals afterwards (just to make sure they are getting proper care).
I HAVE 4 DOGS AND NOT TO BE RUDE IT WILL SPREAD TO YOUR OTHER PETS. ITS AIRBORNE. THERES NOTHING YOU CAN DO, TAKE HIM TO THE VET, IT COULD KILL HIM. HE NEEDS TO BE TREATED WITH AN ANTIBOTIC, IT WONT GO AWAY BY IT SELF. MAKE SURE THAT HE IS DRINKING WATER NOT TO GET DEHYDRATED.
You have the internet.
Don’t give me the load about can’t afford a vets visit.
Natural remedies for Kennel Cough have risen in popularity in recent years due in part to pet owner’s concerns about the affects that conventional vaccines (and antibiotics) have on the immune system. Herbs such as Plantago Lanceolate have been used to treat dry coughs and homeopathic remedies such as Magnesium Phosphate is effective as an antispasmodic. Kalium Sulphate is often called the "natural antibiotic" and is used to treat infections.
Vetrinary treatment is generally limited to symptomatic relief of the coughing with non-prescription, and occasionally prescription, cough suppressants. If the dog is running a fever or there seems to be a persistent and severe cough, antibiotics are occasionally utilized to assist the dog in recovering from Kennel Cough. It can happen that secondary bacterial invaders will complicate a case of Kennel Cough and prolong the recovery and severely affect the upper airway. Therefore the use of antibiotics is determined on an individual basis.
I do agree though, if you get any animal than you need to be able to afford that animal.
Call the vet, tell ‘em your story. Who else is more qualified to give you some good, helpful ideas that you can trust? And, your vet will have knowledge of the condition, which is valuable should you end up making that office visit.
Phone calls are free and peace of mind is priceless.
(unless the vets office is long distance….then the phone call is cheap).
Kennel cough is like a cold for people.
If you see a green gunky nose or your dog stops eating — Worry. Otherwise — stop worrying!!!
I had 8 down at once with kennel cough — and they were all vaccinated too by the way. I called my vet and she said "don’t you DARE bring them here!"
Try some Robitussin DM, a human cough suppressant available at any drug store. Use as directed for people, but use just 1 teaspoon per 20 pounds of dog. Don’t overdo it—DM can be pretty strong stuff.
See the link below
Kennel cough is usually self-limiting. It can be caused by a virus, so like a human cold, it will run its course and all you need is supportive care (rest, fluids, fresh air).
Sometimes, the dog will get a secondary infection or pneumonia and need antibiotics, so you need to watch yours closely to make sure it doesn’t start getting worse, have trouble breathing, run a fever, etc.
