How long is kennel cough contagious

My 4 month old toy poodle puppy was diagnosed with kennel cough and has been on his meds for 4 days now. my mom is coming into town for a visit, and will be bringing her bichon frieze who is 8 years old. I am worried that her dog will catch my puppy’s cold. My mother on the other hand is not worried. She says that it shouldn’t be contagious because my pup has been on his meds…..What do you think?

Before Mom gets here, call your vet. I don’t think 4 days will do it, but that’s my opinion…at the Rescue they won’t let people with other dogs adopt a dog with kennel cough (hard and fast rule). Good luck! kjl
Ask your vet, but I would guess until he is cured.

Has your mom’s dog been vaccinated for it? I adopted a young puppy who came home with kennel cough, and my older dog never got it. She was vaccinated only 2 weeks prior to bringing our little one home!
There is no medicine to TREAT kennel cough, you probably have a cough suppressant, or an antibiotic to treat something other than kennel cough itself.
Of course, the vaccination is only for one strain of kennel cough….
