I am pleased that you are working on house training your pup so early!
There is a lot contoversy (pro and con) regarding initial training of a pup to paper or to the outdoors To be honest, the transition from paper indoors…. to… the great outdoors is relatively easy, so choose whatever method meets your personal needs.
When first using the puppy pads, try to find a puddle of urine that the pup has already passed and soak up a little with a piece of tissue or the pad itself. The puppy will know it’s own urine scent and will eventually associate the pad as the place he/she is supposed to relieve itself. ( you could place a urine soaked tissue on top the piddle pad if you choose)
.
It is important to make sure that you place the piddle pads consistently in one place, so that the puppy gravitates to that area. You can use the same method ,should you need to, for training your pup where to evacuate it’s stools.
It takes a little while to achieve continuous use of the pads by the puppy, but, don’t get discouraged…I would do the transporting of the pup’s own urine to the piddle pad for a week or two ( discard the soiled pad as often as needed) or until the puppy gets the idea what you want! My experience that the "Toy breeds" of dogs are slow to learn when it comes to house breaking, but, not all toy breeds are difficult.
When the time comes to train your dog to go outside, take one of the soiled puppy pads and stake it to the ground where you want the dog to relieve itself ( I use tent pegs to hold the pad in place). Over a couple weeks reduce the size of the outdoor pad by tearing the soiled part in smaller and smaller portions and discard the rest. Eventually you won’t have to leave any soiled pad outside at all!
This really does work, you just need to make the commitment to keep the routine going until you have gained your goal with the training
Kennel cough is a highly contagious viral disease that can infect a dog! The dog ends up coughing like a human child with Whooping Cough. The dog will run a fever, can bubble with copious amounts of mucus, be listless and so forth.
There is a vaccine available for this disease and is well worth the cost of having your dog vaccinated….. kennel cough is physically exhausting for a dog!
You could expect that you will lose sleep, as well, for the sound the dog makes cannot be ignored!
My best wishes on adopting the little fellow !
I prefer not to use the puppy pads, it only teaches them to go in the house take the puppy out like ebery 30 minutes especially after it eats, i use a crate to train my pup, it wont poop where it sleeps
IMO puppy pads don’t work. You’re just teaching him where to go IN THE HOUSE. If no one is home to watch the puppy all day, he should be crated or contained in a room with washable floors. Start by taking away all food and drink by 6 pm. Take out as early in the am as possible. Take him to the same spot every time. When he goes, praise the hell out of him and rush him inside and give him a treat. Take him every hour or so at first and late at night for the last time. Overnight should be same as daytime. Kennel Cough is a potentially fatal upper respiratory disease passed by air containing the virus. Puppies should be vaccinated for Kennel Cough at 6 and 8 weeks and again depending on if he is an our side dog, around a lot of dogs etc.
try using a confined area. put the bedding in one place and then the food and water and then the potty papers with newspaper on top–some people us a bathroom to train them and be sure if they are out of that area that you have paper down for them to find…then start the paper outside if you wish and always a treat when you see them potty correctly. i use baby food toddler turkey sticks by gerber.
