Help with dog gagging and nose sealed with green snot (Kennel Cough)?
I adopted a 9month old shephered mix from a local shelter about two weeks ago. On the first week, she had some green drainage in her nose so we took her to the vet. The vet said she is very underweight, has Kennel Cough, and has temperature a little higher than normal. She was given antibiotics. I still feed her the medicine twice everyday, but her symptoms have gotten worse.
She keeps gagging every five or less seconds without exaggeration. And her nose is completely sealed with green discharge. I’m calling the vet again soon, but is there anything that atleast I can do to help this poor dog? It hurts to just watch.

Turn on the shower really hot, and take your dog to the bathroom with you (but not in the shower stall). The steam of sitting in the room with you will help with the symptoms of congestion. The vet may opt to put your dog under anesthesia and suction out all the mucous and nasty congestion to help ease the dog’s symptoms. Flushing the dog’s nasal cavities with saline, when done under anesthesia, can also help clear the infection.
hi,
Kennel cough is perhaps the closest canine equivalent to the common cold. It’s rarely life-threatening, but it sure can be uncomfortable for your dog. here are some guidelines which might aid you in addressing your problem.

hope this helps.
regards.
Yep, the steamy shower trick can help.
If the symptoms are worse, than call the Vet now, instead of soon, and express your concerns.
It’s also possible that there is Now, more than one underlying issue.
Best of Luck!
Clean the discharge from her nose with a warm washcloth and a Q-tip,then call the vet.The dog may need a different antibiotic.I know someone who just had a dog die from what started out as kennel cough and turned to pneumonia.
Not to scare you,but it sounds as though it could be distemper.

I remember when I was a kid and a friend’s dog had distemper, and what I remember most was the green snot clogging the poor things nose. Not saying the dog has it,but it is a possibility. To help her breathe, clean the goo from her nose and use the steam, like someone else suggested. I hope the vet can give the dog something to relieve it’s misery.
Does the dog have labored breathing? This stuff being diagnosed as KC frequently turns in to viral pneumonia. I’m betting that more often that not these dogs have canine flu.
What antibiotics are you giving? Have x-rays been done to rule out pneumonia?
Keep the dog hydrated. If the dog is not drinking enough you should get some sub-q fluids.
Watch the dogs temperature and apply cool packs to groin, between pads of paws, around neck.
I also suggest coupage (sp?) to help break things up in his/her lungs.
And ask the vet if he/she’s on call so you can contact them if the dog gets worse.
