For the past couple of days my dog has been coughing like she’s choking on a hairball. Usually happens when she first gets up in the morning. Which causes her to vomit. Same thing happened today, only now she sounds like she can’t breathe. A constant wheezing sound. From what I researched online it sounds like kennel cough. :/
I know you all have your opinions about local pet stores…but hear me out on this one. Whether it was the right decision to buy her from a pet store, she was days away from being euthanized and we truthfully thought all the hype you hear about pet stores and sick dogs wouldn’t affect us. It did and now we just need some advice. You can read our previous questions regarding our new miniature schnauzer puppy for more information.
In a nut shell, when we purchased her, she had a scratch above her eye that they thought was ringworm, but after treating it for two weeks they decided it was just a scratch from another puppy. Three weeks after purchasing her and bringing her home, she started getting diarrhea and vomiting. We did take her to the vet where she has been ever since. Her temperature was 106 degrees, her white blood cell count was 700 and after an x-ray they determined all of her organs were swollen, but her liver was extremely enlarged. The vet thinks it may be sepsis, but noticed on her paperwork from this pet store that they had her on two antibiotics at the same time for over three weeks right up until the day we purchased her. One was an ointment for her eye, which is understandable. The other was Baytril. I called the pet store and they state it was for kennel cough.
On a side note, we bought her at 16 weeks and she was in the back where no one could see her. They told us this was because she was older and people just wanted to see the newborn puppies…we took her home instantly! Anyways, everything I’m reading on the internet says to use caution when giving Baytril to puppies and that it’s mainly for really advanced respiratory issues when given or GI issues and liver problems.
The pet store never disclosed anything regarding the kennel cough and the vet thinks there is no way our puppy should have been on the antibiotics that long. With a current vet bill over 00, I want the pet store to pay for this…do we have any ground to stand on? We’ll do anything for this puppy…we’re just frustrated the kennel cough was never disclosed to us even though they took her off the antibiotics the same day we purchased her.
The antibiotic IS listed on our paperwork that she had been given one pill/day, but next to all her check up items she is listed as GREAT condition. Other than her eye…that does have Ringworm with a ? by it and an arrow pointing to the medication listed to note that’s what they were giving it to her for. There is no notation regarding the Baytril. ADDITIONAL: I forgot to basically mention that we don’t disagree with this medication the pet store gave her, we just do not think it was given to her for kennel cough. We feel she was given the medication for GI issues that have come back and are affecting her today.
2 days ago my dog woke up coughing like she has something stuck in her throat. She threw up and i thought that was the end of it. She did this a couple more times that day and once the following day. I take her to doggie day care so i thought maybe it was kennel couch and when I watched a video on it, its definitely what she has/had. Today, though, she hasnt coughed once. If my dog had a very mild case of kennel cough, can it go away on its own? Is there such thing as a "mild case of kennel cough"?
I have a 6 month old Beagle puppy who has had "Kennel Cough" for over a month now, could this really be Kennel Cough? We took Buddy in about a month ago with what we thought was Kennel Cough and so does the Vet, they gave of 10days for of medicine, after the 10 days there was no improvement, we went back to the vet and they gave us another 16 days worth of medicine and said if they doesn’t clear it up they inject medicine directly into his throat, Yikes. We have a second older dog who is still not showing signs of Kennel cough, what else could this be, what should we do?
We have two boxers (6 and 8 years old) and almost 2 weeks ago they were put up in the kennel because we went on vacation. Now they both have a cough. It sounds like they’re trying to hack up something but nothing is coming up. I guess during the day today, my grandma said that they were fine and once I got home from school, and they did their boxer excited wiggle, it started back up again. So it goes away and then comes back every couple of hours. I heard kennel cough will run it’s course and that it’s just like a human cold but you need to keep an eye on it.
Do you think it’s Kennel Cough? If it doesn’t get better by tomorrow night, I’m taking them to the vet on Friday.
And yes, they have all of their shots and what not. Yes, they’ve had their Bordatella because they can’t even step foot in the door at their kennel without having one. I don’t think it’s any allergic reaction to anything from the kennel because they have been there hundreds of times.
My girl is a barker and I know she barks A LOT at the kennel because she comes back and doesn’t bark at all. But her voice is back now.
They’re also all caught up with their heartworm medications, I know coughing can be a sign of heart problems.
My dog gets up and makes this weird loud breathing noise that sounds like he’s coughing almost. He does that a lot and i get worried but my dad says it’s normal but i’m still worried anyways and just recently i saw someone asking about a sick dog and some one said it might be kennel cough.
Does my golden retriever/black lab mix have kennel cough.
P.S is kennel coughing really bad that i need to take him to the vet, cause i definately will for his sake.
I THINK my pom has caught kennel cough. He also has a trachea problem but it never sounds this bad or lasts this long =(…he’s been to the dog park twice in the past two weeks…sorry for the quality. It was taken with a cell phone camera

My dog is up to date on his shots, but when we looked at the packet we got with his shotsit said he needed a Kennel Cough. What is Kennel Cough? I cant find it anywhere and cant take him to the vet. If I dont give it to him will it effect him??
ok so my other dog is 6 hes a small/medium sized dog. he got kennel cough. he gave it to my 3 month old puppy which weighs 5 lbs. were going to the vet in like 2 days cuz of the appointment date and its hard to sleep at night cuz he just sits there and coughs. what are some very safe things i can do? sitting in steamy room?
One of my Golden Retriever bitches has contracted Kennel Cough at a dog show 2 Sundays ago. The 1st day we noticed that she was coughing, she started having involuntary urination (urinary incontinence) too. Urine will just leak out of her while she is lying down & she doesn’t even realize it. NONE of our dogs has ever had incontinence before so this is the 1st time we are seeing this kind of thing happening to one of our dogs.
We brought her to the Vet 4 days ago & she has been on Clavamox (general anti-biotics) since then & the last time she had a leakage was about 2 days ago. She still behaves normally, her appetite is still good, she has plenty of energy, nothing about her has changed but she is still hacking & coughing quite a bit but we can definitely see improvement in her already.
She will be going back to the Vet on Thursday to get checked. Doctor isn’t sure what is causing her incontinence but he thinks it was triggered by the kennel cough & maybe when she coughs, she loses control of her muscles & the urine just comes out. I remember the time when I had a terrible cough, I would leak just a tiny bit whenever I coughed really hard…so I guess that’s what’s happening with her too.
Anyway what I wanted to ask was, have any of you experienced this with any of your dogs who had kennel cough?
My Shiba Inu puppy was diagnosed with kennel cough. His vet (for 2 weeks now) had us give him Sudafed and Amoxicillian. He shows no signs of getting rid of this sickness, and I just want to know what works the best and is our vet actually scamming us so he can get more money by charging us for vet visits every week (we had the dog for 3 weeks, and tomorrow will be the third time i am taking him to the vet)? Thanks!
Please help. I have a dog that is three ROXY that just got Bordatella shot2 weeks ago. We just got a new puppy JAN 30 and 5 days later it looks like he has kennel cough. I don’t want my 3 year old dog Roxy to get sick. What can I do?
Last week I brought home an 18 month old American Cocker Spaniel from a local shelter….I took him to the Vet the next day….he has kennel cough….hes been on antibiotics for 4 full days…his cough is better but hes sneezing…scratching…clearing his throat…runny nose…..could this just be the kennel cough or…could he have allergies? if so what type of meds do they give dogs with allergies?
Hello, I have a 10yr Golden/Lab which may have Kennel Cough and his doctor is having 2nd thoughts because his throat doesn’t appear to be sore and he doesn’t cough or gag when touched. The doctor put him on a amoxicillin tablet and a cough suppressant which seemed to help, but didn’t clear it up. He wants me to see an internist and I really can’t afford it. I need some kind of home remedy that won’t hurt him or some advise to whether my doctor has some validity to what he is telling me.
I just bought a 3 month old kitten 3 weeks ago and it’s up to date on its shots but lately it’s been walking around sneezing and wheezing, is that kennel cough, or just allergies?
