Kennel Cough Treatment Archives

Kennel Cough?

We have a 9-month-old puppy and we think he has Kennel Cough. We are not completely sure how he may have come in contact with it but he fits all the symptoms. The list of symptoms he has shown (yesterday and today) are: constant sneezing, coughing, gagging, retching (trying to vomit) and a small amount of foam expelled after coughing. These seem to come in spells that only last a few seconds (except for the sneezing which is through out the day). Once the spell is over he goes back to normal activity. He is still eating, drinking and playing as usual. He does seem to be sleeping more then he normally does though.
We are going to call our vet in the morning and see what their opinion is but we are wondering what the treatment will be.
So, if anyone has ever had a puppy or adult dog that was diagnosed with Kennel Cough, could you please detail what the treatment was? I am just curious what he will be in for when we visit the vet’s office.
Thanks in advance.

Greyhound Racing – Where Dogs Always Lose

Welcome thoughtful viewers, to Animal World: Our Co-Inhabitants. On today’s edition of our Stop Animal Cruelty series, we will investigate the abuses inherent in greyhound racing. Let’s first look at the rich, beautiful inner lives of our beloved canine kin, more specifically, the gentle greyhound, an ancient dog first bred centuries ago in the Middle East…

OMG will my dog be ok?

AAAAH i was the person who asked about kennel coughing, and i can’t go to the vet ’til next week.

And after some one told me that kennel coughing can lead to pink eyes my dog does have pink eye! i went to the vet this week as well when he told me about pink eye and gave me treatments for it that isn’t working.

But now i have to wait ’til next week for the vet’s appointment. I’m so worried, i had no clue about kennel coughing since i’m still new at this dog ownership thing and i think i let it go for too long! he’s still playing well and eating well but he has been drinking less and coughing more and the pink eye medication isn’t helping.

What should i do until next Saturday. I’m crying while i write this cause i’m so worried. Maybe it’s not that bad but my dogs are like my own kids and yes i am very dramatic and paranoid about this. Is that so bad.

PLEASE NO RUDE COMMENTS.
and why would the vet even make you wait for that long. that pisses me off please answer.

I’m currently fostering a Bassett Hound who is recovering from heartworm treatments (I gave him the last oral dose yesterday, day 14). I’ve noticed tonight he sounds like he has a "rattle" in his chest when he breathes. He doesn’t seem distressed, and the Humane Society (where I work) told me he might cough some while his body is getting rid of the dead heartworms, but they didnt’ say anything about this rattle-y breathing. It sounds almost like a kennel cough type rattle. Does anyone have any experience with dogs recovering from heartworm treatments? Is this "normal"?
He’s sleeping at the moment, so I’m kind of starting to wonder if maybe he’s just snoring or sort of growling in his sleep? I’ve only had him with me for 2 days, so I don’t know if this is something he usually does when he’s sleeping. I’ll wake him up and see if it makes a difference. If not, I’ll call the kennel manager.

He’s definitely been on very limited activity (crated, except when he’s lying on the couch and watching tv with me or going to the potty) even though he’s getting pretty annoyed with me for making him rest all the time. LOL
P.S. I know I may sound a little paranoid, and it may just be snoring or normal Bassett breathing, but I haven’t ever fostered a Bassett or a heartworm recovering dog before. This dog is just so precious, I’d hate for anything to happen to him on my watch.

My grandma's dog is sick…is it?

We think he has kennel cough, for the past 3 days he hasn’t ate anything and barely drank a little water today. He has been eating alot of grass. We gave him De-Wormer medicine yesterday because he had worms and all he has done is throw up, starting today he has been throwing up alot of blood. Unfortanetly there are no Vets in this area that are open on weekends so we are keeping him away from the rest of our dogs until he can be seen. And he’s too active to have parvo so we’re guessing it’s kennel cough. Anybody know of symptoms or temporary treatments? My grandma is going nuts her other dog just died and she’s traumatized.
he has ate grass his whole life and his previous owners had him addicted to drugs however that was over a year ago that we saved him from them, just adding that incase it helps. And his throat is swolen.
OK let me add this..for the past couple days he was just sick, not sick enough to worry us since every once in a while our dogs get like that for a day or two and they’re fine…starting today…as in…AFTER 6PM SO IT WAS TOO LATE TO TAKE HIM TO THE VET OR WE WOULD HAVE!!TRUST ME WE CALLED AROUND ALREADY and we do live in a rural area with only 2 dog vets in town and the ones out of town are closed also….ANYBODY ELSE HAVE SOME LECTURES 4 ME AS IF THIS ISN’T HARD ENOUGH?!?! AND PLEASE DON’T TELL ME HOW TO RAISE OUR DOGS WE’VE DONE JUST FINE SO FAR~~~ thanx to those that understand, it’s appreciated.
THANKS GUYS. and yes I have tried calling MANY vets that aren’t even in my area. This dog has atleast had a long happy life. But THANKS-to the people who didn’t lecture me.
–D— If you haven’t noticed, I’ve got enough answers already so F*CK OFF!! F*CK YOU and your opinion, maybe you would have the right to talk shit if you knew more about the situation, all I asked for was advice, THAT’S IT! so what if I didn’t form my paragraphs right I don’t have to this isn’t formal so once again F*CK YOU!! at least it doesn’t make me as bad of a person as you! F*CK ALL YOU SH*T TALKERS! YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW THE SITUATION AROUND HERE!

Dog hacking question?

I have a 5 month old German Shepherd. This morning around 6am he started hacking…..sometimes he spits up stomach fluid…looks clearish/brownish….he has been vaccinated at 9 weeks with the DHLPP…then again at 13 weeks….then at 17 weeks was his DHLPP with Rabies and I asked the vet to do the Bordetella/Kennel Cough. I am unsure why he is hacking…..I notice it is mostly when he is lying down in his crate.

I would like and Idea of what this is…and possible home treatment methods preferebly by a vet or vet tech that knows what they are talking about. I cannot afford to take him to the vet as I just got layed off…..Please if you have something rude to say….keep it to yourself or I will report you. Also he is playing, eating and drinking normally.
I got him his bordetella/kennel cough vaccine because it is an airborn virus and you don’t need to board your dog to get it…..and he was finished his vaccines just over a month ago.
He is eating normally and drinking…he isn’t bringing up his food…he plays outside with me…..could I give him something to settle his stomach…..

How Do I Know My Dog Has Heart Worm Disease?

Hello people who own computors and are hopefully nice enough to answer my question! lol. Anyway, I have a little 2-year-old black and white dog. It is a Shi-Tzu and POSSIABLY mixed with a Lasa-Apsa. She keeps making a honking sound when she is active. Is this typical for this breed? We thought she had Kennel Cough, and got her medication. It worked. Then, we ran out and now she is honking again. Could she have Heart Worms?! What are the symptoms and treatment for Heart Worms in dogs? Please, and Thank You!
I already took the dog to the vet. The test is expensive, and to much money. Does anybody know the symptoms of Heart Worm Disease in dogs?

Bailey and I want to send out a very sincere thanks to Ed Bond, Dr. Al Sears and Dr. Daniel Slaton for their participation in Bailey’s fight with distemper. Without you guys I don’t think Bailey would be here today.I had her for almost 5 weeks and watched her go through all the phases of distemper. She started with coughing pretty constantly. We started treating her for kennel cough. Then she started vomiting about every 4th meal and her eyes and nose became crusty. When she started with the green discharge from her nose ,the vet said she could be 50/50 distemper. We changed her antibiotic and started her on an eye ointment. He said when she started twitching we should probably put her down. I researched the disease and started her on some echinacea and golden seal and vitamins from various websites. I was cooking her chicken and scrambled eggs with hidden veggies. She never really lost her appetite, so that helped stay a little stronger. By the time I found the website about the spinal tap treatment by Dr. Sears she had just started her twitching. But I emailed Ed Bond, who got right back to me within 20 minutes with the names of 2 Dr.’s in Ventura County who have done this procedure, after neuro distemper had set in. Dr. Sears also emailed me to let me know it wasn’t 100%, but without it, it was 100% fatal. He wished us luck. We drove 4 hours to see Dr. Slaton who thought she was a pretty good candidate. Her lungs sounded good and he thought she could handle the

I wanted to post this becuase I have just had a personal experience with Parvo. My 10 week old Border/Collie Dalmation mix just won his battle with this horrible virus!

About a month ago my husband and I had to put down our 4 year old Beagle, Jackson. This was heartbreaking for us but we really thought that another dog would help to fill our void. We went a week later to Kentucky’s Metro Animal Services. We found a tiny little white and black puppy which we adopted and named Harley.

About a week and a half (Friday) after we brought him home we took him to the vet because he had what we suspected to be worms. Anyways, he did have worms- in fact, he had one of the worst cases of tapeworm that the vet had ever seen on top of kennel cough. He also had his 2nd round of shots that day. Everything was fine and taken care of after that.

That Wednesday night Harley began to have a little diarrhea WHICH WAS REALLY SMELLY (your first sign), but nothing to where it raised any concerns with us because he was still completely active and acting normally otherwise. Later that night he threw up once or twice. Still, we didn’t think anything of it.

By Thursday Harley was still having a little diarrhea and he had thrown up once more. I began to do research on what this could be and that’s when I came across Parvo. Call it denial or whatever you wish, but I didn’t believe he had this becuase I hadn’t seen any blood in his stool what-so-ever. He was still happy as usual; however, that day he was a little less active. Mostly laying around and sleeping and didn’t have hardly any interest in food.

By 10:30 that night we decided to take him into the emergency vet just to be safe becuase I was terrified that he would become dehydrated. The vet said that they were going to test for Parvo but that if it came back negative he thought it was simply just a stomach upset because Harley looked so good.

The results came back 15 mins. later and, needless to say, I was devestated! We had just put our other dog down a month ago and had gone through so much turmoil over that incident that this didn’t seem real. I pretty much hated the world by this point! :)

The vet was pretty negative about whether he would survive becuase he was so young and only weighed 15 pounds. We kept him in the hospital overnight and then we were going to make up our minds about what to do the next day. Since we had just spent 0 the month before on our previous dog we were completely tapped out! The vet gave us an estimate for 4 days of treatment for 00. This was astronomically pricey for us- considering that we are basically working poor since I only work part-time right now through school.

We, thankfully, got a loan from my Grandma and were able to keep Harley in the hospital for the full 4 days. Everytime I called to get an update my spirits were crushed. We basically lived for 5 days not knowing whether he would live or die. I didn’t care about anything in between- I didn’t care what it would take- ALL I wanted to know was whether he would make it or not. Period!

Even when he showed signs of progress my vet would remind me that a lot of Parvo puppies have ups and downs and then can go badly very quickly. I understand why they had to be realistic like this with me, and as much as it hurt I did appreciate the honesty.

Over the 4 day span Harley definutely got worse. He was vomitting a lot and had diarrhea so badly that it sprayed all over the inside of his cage. It was bloody and apparently he was extremely depressed. They said he could barley lift his head. As a "mother", this is a VERY emotional time and a VERY difficult thing to hear. I pretty much lived those days with heavy anxiety and very emotionally overwhelmed. I simply could not bare thinking about loosing two of my babies within a 4 week span.

It was touch and go for a while. He would make some progress and then take two steps back. By the 4th day his diarrhea had calmed a bit and the blood was less present. We absolutely had no choice but to take him out of the hospital that night, By this point our bill was now at 00….0 over the original estimate. We took him home that night even though our vet wanted to keep him for at least another day.

I made the choice that I would do anything to nurse him back to heath at home. I bleached my ENTIRE house up and down. This took me countless hours even with the help of a friend. I washed all of the fabrics in my home- even steamcleaning the carpets and couches twice. I’m pretty sure that I went completely overboard, but I was so upset by this sickness that I didn’t want to take any chances. Plus, I wanted Harley to come home to a nice, clean house. We bought all new toys and made a special area for him next to our bed with towels newspapers and potty-pads. Luckily, he didn’t have any dripping diarrhea here though.

The vet told us that since he had survived the 4th day and was showing signs of improvment that
Sorry everyone! I didn’t realize that until just now my story was cut off! Trust me I had a whole lot that was not shown that I wrote along with this.
I am going to try to make this as short as possible- report me if you want- my whole point of posting this was to give hope to someone who is scared for their puppy’s life…..

Since he had shown signs of improvement by the 4th day the vet said that hopefully he would make it. Anyways…long story short- we brought him home and fed him the special diet that the vet recommended of 3-parts plain rice to 1-part cooked unseasoned chicken. This would help to give him protein and harden his stools. It takes about 2 weeks for the dogs to return to normal. Be prepared for when your puppy comes home!! Harley was 15 lbs. when we took him in and 4 days later he was all of 7-8 lbs. Keep them warm. Keep everything clean. Keep everything calm and quiet. If you see any signs of them not eating or drinking a fairly good amount at least call the vet. They can quickly turn downhill again. I was so unaware of Parvo and that unfortunatley caused much headache later on………
There is a saying that breeders have to NEVER LET YOUR PUPPY’S FEET TOUCH THE GROUND UNTIL THEY HAVE BEEN FULLY VACCINATED! Don’t let them around other puppies who are not fully vaccinated. Never take them to public places (stores, parks, etc..) until this is done either. Remember it takes about 2 weeks after their last vaccine to be protected against this virus! If you do find yourself with a case of Parvo- TAKE IT SERIOUSLY! Take them to the vet IMMEDIATELY! They can die within 48 hours of showing their first signs! Do your research! It’s important to understand what you are dealing with. If you do find yourself in this awful spot- KEEP HOPE! Remember that it is out of your hands! Getting your pet in the hospital is the best that you can do. Try and take comfort in that! I seriously thought that Harley was going to pass away but he was our little Christmas miracle! Your pet knows how much you love them even if you can’t be with them! Nothing can take that away from you!…..
Just try to stay strong! Pray, meditate, write, sing, cry, be angry- whatever it takes to keep it together. There is hope! It’s up to you to fight as hard as your little puppy does!

I understand that not all stories end as happy as ours did, but you have to remember that all doggies go to heaven. Parvo is a horrible sickness for both the pet and the owner, and sometimes their little bodies just simply cannot fight this monster.

I truely wish nothing but the best outcome for anyone who is going through this right now. If anyone has any questions about what all comes with fighting Parvo- from a personal standpoint- I would be happy to answer any questions.

Again, I know that not all people would have taken this experience as seriously as I did, but when you feel like I do, that your animals are literally your children, this time can be devestating!
Sorry that this contained no question…but, again, report me if you wish….whatever. My intentions were just to provide a survival story from Parvo – - – like one that I tried so hard to find when we were dealing with it.

And to answer the question about the shelter…we did try to fight them…however, there are many other cases going on with them in this area so mine is not the only one. Trust me, they heard from me and will be again! :) Their claim is that Parvo is one of those viruses that can test negative one day and then positive the next- which is true. So, since we had him for two weeks they are arguing that he caught it AFTER we took him home. The worms are a different situation. There is NO way that he caught those after we got him since he was so badly infected. I have not decided what exactly I am going to do about that yet. I may join the media parade that other families are right now.
Sad that when all you try to do is save a life you end up getting screwed :(

I bought two dogs from jack’s dog farm this past February. Their living conditions were pretty awful and even with all their fur, the barn they stay in was freezing and filty. I had heard horror stories about the place and decided that I wanted to rescue a dog from there instead of the SPCA. I was so taken back by the way these animals were being treated that I ended up taking home two beautiful blue heeler/eskimo mix puppies. Both puppies had it pretty rough at first, they were treated for bronchitis, kennel cough, and went months trying to fight off pancreatitis, the list goes on and on. They also have very weak stomachs and experience vomiting and diarrhea on a weekly basis even with no change in their diets. My motivation for writing this review is to try and contact anyone who has also adopted the other puppies from this litter. Although my puppies are now seeing better days, I wanted to find out any information on the health status of their siblings. If any other owners are experiencing these similar health issues with this particular litter from jack’s, please send me a comment. They were born on November 19th, 2007 and are currently nine months old. Jack’s obviuosly isn’t the ideal place for most families to adopt a dog, but if your wanting to save a puppy from illness and neglect then I actually recommend it. There are tons of puppies there who could really use a loving home and family.

I have to say we bought a purebreed collie from Jacks back in 1992 he lived to 12 years of age with no problems but when I went back there last summer to look for a new yellow lab I was VERY sadden at the way the pups were treated!! He picks them up by the scruff of their neck and tossed them to my 10 and 12 year old children like they were a bean bag. My 12 year old almost dropped the pup and they looked so scared to be held!! I felt bad for the pup really!! I asked which one’s were females in the litter and his responce was "I don’t know look for yourself!!" That shocked me even more!!. Not professional at all!! He charges 0 for a lab and they get this kinda treatment!! Does not say much for Jacks and if you are charging that much you better give me into on the parents like backround and photos!! Go on Puppyfinder.com the pups come from breeders that home raise them and most of the time the parents are on the property so you can see them. I got my AKC yellow lab for 0 on there. She is now 11 months old and doing well. You can even put in what state you live in and find whatever breed you want that way. I will not buy from Jacks ever again as I was not happy with the way he handles his dogs. Very uncaring and acts like this is a business only!!!

I went to look at puppies on 09/08/2007. It was a pretty hot day and a lot of the dogs were panting with many looking lethargic. I was completely horrified to see that more than half HAD NO WATER! Now i know its difficult to keep up with every puppy as soon as they knock over water, etc…but this was just too many to be the case. These animals are not being properly cared for. I would suggest going anywhere but this place for a puppy! Animals are treated much better at shelters!!

sickning: We have adopted a puppy here, and know a lot of other people who have adopted a puppy from here. All the dogs had "problems" and had to be put down or given away because of such bad inbreeding and living conditions. The guy who we had purchased the dogs was rude and acted like they were just objects for money. The place was dirty and the puppies were kept in small wire cages with like four puppies a pen.

Lol I am contemplating on going to Jack’s and causing a raucous. I have reported it the PSPCA, Philly PAWS/PACCA, MLAR(the people who helped on the Oprah show to bust puppy mills), and a local animal shelter. Any other people I can call? It would be great.

Go under the link title "Our Puppies" and click on Large,Medium,or small Breed. I am only 15 years old so theres not much I can do. I might go and take some photos.
guys i have sent email to Oprah’s staff(since she did the whole segment on puppy mills), MLAR(people who helped Oprah bust puppy mills), PSPCA,PACCA/PHILLY PAWS, and my local animal shelter!!! We need many people to report…I am thinking of gong to Jack’s today and taking pics but I dont know if it will work out because what if they catch me???!?!

do the vets have liability for this?

i got m ty dog neutered on friday he was perfectly healthy when he went into the vets, he came home friday night and by saturday he had started "coughing", and he still is now. its not very bad but is getting worse…i believe it to be kennel cough. he is going back to the vets today for a check on his wound, so i will find out then.
but……will they charge me for a consultation and the medication even if he caught it from their surgery?

this is the second dog i have had neutered there and the second one who has come home with kennel cough after being there.
last time when i asked if it was possible it had been caught in the vets they just said "not a chance, he could have got it anywhere" …..well he had not been mixing with other dogs or walking where other dogs had been as he had been kept in the house and yard only as he was recovering!
i just think its a bit coincidental that both dogs after going to the vets have contracted kennel cough..what do u think? should i have to pay for treatment or should they provide it complimentry as its the second time this has happened…they cant really deny it now?! x
i didnt no u could vacinate for kennel cough
vet had never told me
they just had duramune when they was puppys and their yearly boosters x
begining to think my vets is a bit crap tbh and its supposed to be the best one for a 20 mile radius for where i am!
why would they not tell me there is a possibility of coughing after the op? and why would they not tell me u can vacinate for kennel cough?!
edit, no i wouldnt because u expect kids to pick up colds at day care, u dont expect your dog to come home from the vets ill!
plus medical care is free any way, where as vet care is extortionately priced!

How can they call it a humane society?

My dog that i had for ten years passed away last week, my fiance and i adopted a puppy from our local humane society, only to end up with a sick puppy..we thought it was just kennel cough and took it to the vet today and found out there is a pretty good chance it could be distemper. When looking back on my forms from the humane society, my puppy had been there since march 11 and we adopted him march 21…he was there a whole ten days without any deworming, bordetella shot, or flea treatment. how is this at all humane? and my forms also state there will be no refund, but i can get another pet if this one dies…i don’t mind losing the 85$, but why would i want to go get another sick dog only to be saddened by its death once again?

how is that at all humane?

so pissed
my vet even said that these places are given the medicine to help these animals and said he would call himself to tell them what theyre doing is wrong. they are overpopulated but how can a dog be there for that long and just be shoved in a cage and fed? these dogs in shelters should all have a bordetella shot as soon as they come in. maybe they figured he’d been there ten days they rather not waste the medicine and just euthanize instead. not humane at all no matter how you look at it

I adopted a mixed dog from the Humane Society on May 20. I was told he was heartworm positive, but otherwise he was healthy. 2 days later my dog developed Kennel Cough and I found traces of intestinal worms in his stool. I took him to the vet and they charged me 1.51 to treat these problems and to do bloodwork for his upcoming heartworm treatment. I was told heartworm treatment would cost 0 to 00, which is way more than I thought it would be. I had to wait for his cough to go away before scheduling his first heartworm treatment. When I took him in it cost 1.61 for part 1 of treatment, but in the x-rays a foreign object showed up. Now, I’ve been home with the dog constantly or he’s been in a crate so I doubt he swallowed something at my home. He was severely underweight when I took him home and he has had a lack of appetite since I got him. It’s been a struggle to get him to eat, sometimes I have to feed him by hand to get him interested. Now the vet says it’ll cost me 6 to bring him in and induce vomiting to see if the object will come up. If not, then the dog will need stomach surgery, plus his second part of heartworm treatment which will cost another 0. I don’t know how much surgery will cost.

I still have a week and a half to return the dog to the shelter and get a refund, return all of his belongings to Petco, and get a refund on the pet insurance that I bought but won’t cover because these conditions are pre-existing.

I was willing to cough up the 0 heartworm cost because even though I was mistaken about the cost (I thought it would be 0-0) I knew that my dog had this problem. I am irritated about the other problems that the Humane Society didn’t tell me about, although they probably didn’t know cause he didn’t show any symptoms.

My mom and my fiance think I should return the dog since they think it’s ridiculous that I might have to pay for surgery. I’ve already spent 0 on vet bills and I really love the dog, so I don’t want to take him back. However, I only saved up enough money to get a dog and cover any minor health issues; I just graduated from college and I have to pay back my loans in 6 months so I shouldn’t empty out my savings account to care for the dog.

I’m really torn about what to do. I can’t stop crying when I think about it. I know the reasonable thing to do would be to return the dog since I was under the impression he was healthy and wouldn’t cost too much. But I have really enjoyed spending the last 2.5 weeks with my dog and he’s the sweetest thing. What should I do?
Yes I should have researched how much heartworm treatment cost, but I could only put the dog on hold for 24 hrs, my family was visiting in town, and I had to get supplies and clean house to make it ready for the dog. I AM WILLING TO PAY for the heartworm treatment, but can’t pay for the surgery too.

He has shown NO symptoms for the ingested object aside from being underweight with a low appetite, which he already had when I got him. It has not created a blockage, he poops 3 times a day. It’s unlikely that he ate it at my house since he hasn’t been left alone.

I have pet insurance just for situations like this one. BUT it doesn’t cover this because it happened during the policy waiting period.
Turns out he didn’t swallow anything. Additional x rays show that he has a BB embedded in his skin and the object near his stomach is a pellet from a gun. Somebody shot him twice.

I think thats nuff said
ok just making sure lol i reported it to my local animal shelter and to the pspca!!
actually some people had hip dysplasia within a few months after they bought them

My dog has heart worm but she's really active?

I’m fostering a dog that has heart worm and kennel cough, she’s about one year old, 23 lbs and of an unknown breed. She just got her first treatment for heart worm several days ago and I know I have to keep her quiet and calm but the problem is she is a VERY high energy dog…. The vet said we could take her on walks, just not runs, and we do twice a day but she’s still very hyper. I let her out of her cage and she tears around and about and jumps over furniture. I try to stop her but nothing really works with her. She’s a sweet dog and I really want to help her but I don’t know how…

In order to cure dry, flaky skin in dogs, it’s important to see if the dog’s diet can be improved and to find out if the dog has allergies. what should i do???

as some of you know,… we got a 4-5mth old german/retriever mix from a shelter last wed. we were told she had kennel cough… she didnt. she has distemper with a secondary infection of phemonia, (sorry for the miss spell). so i was givin some meds…Azithromycin to give to .8CCs once daily and Acetylcysteine (20%-10ml) to give every 6 hours. well, after bringing her home yesterday… we gave her a steam treatment (cause of her breathing) as we gently patted the sides of her chest (as the vet recom.) well… she coughed, which was a good sign, but then she sneezed, when blood started dripping from her nose. well, we freaked out, but it wasnt a lot coming out, so we waited. well…. its been nearly 24 hours and she is still dripping blood every 5-10 mins from her nose. bright red, liquid and some mucis (for the women: kinda like a clot)… i cannot take her to the vet tonight. the shelter said, that if the meds didnt help, that they would have to put her down. but they told me.
… they told me to wait 3 days… what should i do… if shes not better in 3 days they want to put her down…

Help with heartworms – he was protected?

I have a 6 yr old black lab who was recently diagnosed with heartworms. He was on revolution that was suppossed to repel mosquitos, fleas and such. he has been on revolution since he was old enough for flea treatment. i got this news when he went to the vet for a broken leg. My daughter let him out when he jumped the fence and got hit by a car. his leg is also broken but it is a clean break and the vet said it will heal just fine. i have been following up on the slow kill method as well as the other treatment to heartworms. with his leg being broken he doesnt use the leg a lot now but i cant see him being crated for that long of a time. the vet also told me that due to his age he may not come out of the treatment alive. i am leaning more towards the slow kill method but i havent seen any type of success rate with this type of treatment and the vet cant give me anything either. i have tried to call 2 different vets and they are against the slow kill method and say the only method thats guaranteed to work is the aggressive treatment. they also said that yes it is very likely dakota will die in the process. it seems that i am screwed either way i go. i do know that if he does become HW free I will get him on heartgard as well as flea med. does anyone have any advice for me as to where i can go now? my last resort is putting him down and since he has been mine since he was 2 months old i dont want to go that route. please no rude comments as the only thing wrong with him since i have had him is kennel cough. he has been in surgery before when he was fixed and he almost didnt come out of that alive. please help….
** the vet didnt give me a number all she said was chances are he isnt going to make it through it. it may be pretty bad. but it just happened in the last 6 months. he was tested in august when he got updated on his shots again. he gets his shots in the week of august 10th. his date for shot updates is the 12th as i have to get him regestered with the city and have to prove he has had his rabies. he came out negative then. and he was on revolution because the vet i was taking him to said it would work fine. and for the past 5 years it has.
