Home Remedy for Kennel Cough Archives

My dog is ill! Please help!?

Okay I have a 3 year old black lab named sadie. She is my pride and joy and she is a perfect dog. She’s playful, funny, not to rough, and very energetic. Well i moved out recently from my moms place so she ended up bringing home a puppy that had kennel. My mom called me saying Sadie had Kennel cough and was sick but all the other animals healed on their own. She took her to the vet and got antibiotics. I walked in today (after two weeks from the original cough) and freaked out. I found vomit everywhere and the dog I once knew to jump on me and bark loudly laid on the ground with blood shot eyes. Now let me explain the symptoms. She has a very cry runny nose, her eyes are bloodshot, her throw up is more of a snotty throw up (nothing with chunks), she’s verrrryy lethargic, doesn’t want to come when her name is called, her body shakes when she tries to sit down, she won’t open her mouth, there is foam around her lips, and she hasn’t eaten in 2 days. Please someone help in any way. Tell me anything from home remedies for dogs to stories of your dog that once had kennel cough.
Thanks for your help. i got my mom to take her to the vet. The kennel cough turned into pnominia and she past over night. Im crushed but happy she’s in heaven.

I think e-vets are there for life and limb emergencies, what constitutes an emergency is life and limb? This is a very abbreviated overview of my assessment for life and limb emergencies. Was this a sudden onset or chronic illness, has the condition changed? ABCs – airway, breathing, circulation (signs of difficulty breathing and poor circulation/shock go to e-vet). I then review level of consciousness- neurological signs, are they altered in any way, is their eating, drinking and gait intact? For traumatic injuries I review the above and look at DCAPBTLS; deformity, contusion, abrasions, penetrating wounds, burns, tenderness, lacerations, swelling and judge the severity. What’s my general impression, then gather is the dog too much pain of too uncomfortable to wait till morning?

I see this all the time after hours on Y!A. "Get the dog to the vet ASAP". When I read ASAP, I interpret that as an E-Vet but the dog had a bout of diarrhea, maybe some blood in the stool which in my opinion can wait till morning with monitoring. My vet even tried making me schedule my appt 3 days out for my little girl who had a really bad bout of diarrhea, I got them to double book for the next day by saying "it’s bad enough she should get checked out sooner", the diarrhea resolved its self before we even got in to the expedited appt with basic home remedies. A single seizure with no other clinical signs IMO is not an emergency, if it’s status seizures (multiple seizure or last over 2 minutes) it’s an emergency. Is limping really an emergency or can it wait till the AM? Honestly, while there are idiots on here that search the internet when the dog should already be loaded in the car, I also think people kinda jump the gun sending an ear infection or kennel cough to the e-vet…
Let’s see… I took my parrot in for bleeding that I couldn’t get to stop when he flew into a sharp table corner. Then a 16y/o border collie who radomly showed geriatric vestibular disease before I knew what that was, 3 days later she was put to sleep. Also a 14y/o shit tzu who had a seizure disorder who started having multiple seizure over night. Then I had a young bc who I woulda taken to the evet for a major to bleed, after 3 days of my vet having me treat at home, he had an especially bad night and I brought him in to be admitted, which was an emergency.

Ok, so I went to feed our dogs today, and our Black Lab, was coughing kinda hoarse, like as if he needed water, I had just given him fresh water, and he drank half a bucket! But he still is hacking away, and I don’t know if it’s from it being so cold, kennel cough, just a hoarse throat from barking/panting (he loves to run) or something severe.. cause hes turning 11 in a few days, and I’m really worried, cause he hasn’t been to a vet for like 2 years because we can’t afford to get everything done.

ANOTHER Q:
We also think he may have arthritis – as he sometimes falls and and limps and doesn’t put like ANY weight on his back legs, mostly his back left leg. Any home remedies to help?

Thanks!
And yes I know you can’t diagnose a dog over Yahoo Answers,
I just wanted a few opinions. 🙂

The vet gave him meds but wondering if any alternatives??? He is my recent rescued pound puppy. I believe he had kennel cough, but it went away with the anti biotics the vet gave to me. I was hoping for some sort of home remedy idea. Any suggestions that actually have worked from your experience????

why does my dog cough so much?

I rescued my sm. dog at my local animal shelter. When I first got her, I spent time with her at the shelter, and she seemed fine and active. Well I obviously had to have her spayed per the regulations of adoption, so they sent her away to be spayed. When I brought her home, all she does is sleep, go outside for potty, then come in and sleep. She seems like she’s got a cold and cough, cuz she sneezes and coughs often. I have also noticed that when I talk to her she gets all excited and jumps on me, but then retreats to her bed to just hack and cough! Is this normal or is there something wrong? I wish I could take her to the Vet to get her checked out, but they charge an arm and a leg just for a consultation then meds on top of that…. tooooo expensive for me right now…. Is there any home remedies that anyone knows of? Or is this just "kennel cough" and will go away after a few weeks? I’ve only had her for a couple weeks now.. so any info is greatly appreciated! Thanx in advance!!! =)
Thanx Dale A. for your expertise. =) I looked up the possible diagnoses that you mentioned, and found that my dog seems to have not only a cough, but she sneezes alot too. I have to wipe her nose with a scent-free baby wipe because her mucus gets dried on her nose… Your gonna hate me for this, but can I give her baby tylenol or something?? I love my dog, and want to see her better, but I just cant afford to take her to the vet. I didnt expect her to be sick… she was fine at the shelter!! Thanx for your opinion. Much appreciated! =)

What should I do about my dog choking?

A few of my puppies have been coughing/choking a lot lately. I have been told that they have kennel cough. Can you give me a home remedy for this? I can’t afford to take them to the vet, after all, there is 9 of them? What should I do?

Sick 6 month old puppy has kennel cough…?

I wrote in last week about my puppy not eating and was coughing, well i took him to the vet and the vet put him on Clavamox antibiotic and gave a prescription of coughing pills to help suppress the cough. While i am still having a hard time getting him to eat…he seems to want to sleep more and is clearly not feeling well. I called the vet again because a couple days ago his cough got worse. The vet said that it’s not going to magically go away and that its going to take some time and also without more tests and possibly a chest X-Ray there is not much he can do. I was just curious if anyone has any home remedies that might help him feel better. I have been boiling chicken for him and he ate last night and today for me so thats a good sign, but now he has a runny nose and has clear and white discharge…is white ok? i know green or yellow is bad but what about the white? Thanks to anyone who has advice or suggestions!
Thanks Susan B. The vet told me that i am probably worrying more than i should. But i will feel horrible if there was something that I could have done but didn’t and he dies…
He started his medicine on tuesday then on thursday i noticed that his cough got significantly worse. I am still giving him the medicine. it’s going on two weeks since we got him from the pound ( wednesday) and he was sneezing and coughing when we got him … he doesn’t sneeze anymore but the cough has gotten worse…does it get worse before it gets better??????

Kennel Cough?

I have a boxer who is 14 wks. old. He developed kennel cough from a dog next door about 4 wks. ago. I have taken him to the vet and he put him on antibiotics and cough medicine. He has finished the medicine but he continues to cough and he coughs up foamy mucous. Is it normal for kennel cough to last this long? Are there any home remedies that can help it?

Kennel Cough question?

Is there a home remedy or a drug you can give a puppy for a kennel cough that is not an antibiotic?

Any home remedies for possible kennel cough?

I adopted a shepherd mix puppy from the humane society over the weekend and he has developed what I believe to be kennel cough. He is 4 months old and weighs 20 pounds. He has an appointment at the vet on Thursday to be checked out. He had his bordetella vaccine just a few days ago. I was just wondering if there was anything I could do for him at home to ease his coughing? My parents dog had it a few years back and there vet told them they could give her childrens cough medicine but my mom couldn’t remember the ratio of pounds to medicine. If anyone could help me that would be great. He seems to be doing okay now still eating drinking and playing. I just don’t want him to get worse.

The vet says he has bronchitis, I think its kennel cough. Only at night coughing up flem, rolling whooping couch. Has was on steroids from the vet. Meds ended a week ago and has been fine until tonight. I would like to give him something until the vet opens in the morning. I would appreicate a home remedy to help him tonight, thanks.

I took my golden retriever to the vet today and he has kennel cough. Are there any decent (safe) home remedies besides cough medicine for this? I feel weird about giving my dog human cough medicine.

What is a home remedy for Kennel Cough?

We recently adopted a 10 month old Boxer from the Humane Society. We took her to the vet a few days later to get all her shots, including the vaccine for Kennel cough (Bordetella) She started sneezing and couging shortly after that and the vet says that it’s normal. Well it’s been almost a week and she is still coughing really bad. Sometime she coughs up mucus. Any home remedies we can try before taking her back to the vet?
